The Waitangi Marae is right on the waterfront just before the Waitangi bridge. It is 1.5 kms from Paihia in the Bay of Islands. It is approx. 3 ½ hours drive from Auckland. Please see Google map:
We are currently trying to organise a bus to transport people from Auckland to Waitangi, and back at the end of the festival. Will keep you posted once things are confirmed.
The Waitangi Marae:
This Marae is very historic and is where the main Waitangi Day celebrations are held every year to commemorate the signing of the treaty in 1840. For those interested in the history of the treaty and the land, there are many historic sites and information in the area worth visiting. Please read Maori and Marae Cultural Protocol.
There will be an official welcoming ceremony from the Marae to the Jagannatha Family Festival. This will be at 2 pm on Tuesday 14th January. Anyone attending the full 6 day festival is requested to please be there for this ceremony at 2 pm on Tuesday 14th.
There is a range of accommodation available according to your preference. If you have a tent and are happy to camp, there is a large grass area right next to the Marae which is available for camping. For those who prefer to be under a ‘solid roof ‘, the mare has a ‘sleeping hall’ available and provides mattresses and pillows. You will need to bring your own bedding. Please note, this is a communal sleeping arrangement whereby everybody will be sleeping in the same hall… there are no ‘separate rooms’. Thirdly, if you are uncomfortable in a tent, or in a shared hall, there are many motels close by in Paihia. Anyone wishing to stay in a motel is urged to pre-book as this time of year is very busy with tourists and motels units will be difficult to find available.
Prasadam will be served for all devotees and guests twice a day (breakfast, and lunch ) except the arrival day (Tuesday 14th) there will be only evening meal, and the departure day (Monday 20th) there will be only breakfast.
As we know, devotees love cooking, serving and honoring prasadam! Anyone interested to cook one or 2 meals, or to help in the kitchen please contact Buddhi: (022) 121 8908
We would like to get a roster of cooks organised well before the festival if possible.
EARLY BIRD booking prices have been extended to December 15th!
Couple price – $170
There will be 2 Ratha Yatra festivals held during the 6-day festival.
The first will be in Whangarei on Saturday 18th. The second will be Paihia to Waitangi on Sunday 19th. For those who are unable to attend the 6-day festival but are able to come for the weekend, there is a special weekend price as follows:
